Nevis to be "the greenest island on Earth" by 2018

San Juan, Jan 27 (EFE).- Nevis is preparing to become "the greenest island on Earth" by 2018, when the government expects to meet its energy needs entirely from renewable resources, the CEO of the island's tourism authority said here Tuesday.

Greg Phillip is currently in San Juan with a delegation of officials and hotel and airline representatives to promote Nevis' attractions.

He pointed to several renewable energy projects - a solar power station, wind farm and a geothermal plant - intended to produce electricity for more than 12,000 residents.

Nevis expects eventually to sell surplus energy to St. Kitts, its partner in the twin-island federal state, and to other Caribbean islands, Phillip said.

Determined to become a destination for "sustainable tourism," Nevis is on track to achieve 100 percent energy from renewables by 2018, when the geothermal plant is supposed to begin operating, Phillip said.

The St. Kitts and Nevis government is currently building a second solar farm with the aim of reducing the Caribbean nation's dependence on fossil fuel.

The first solar farm was commissioned in September 2013 and now generates electricity for Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

The Dolfi is being bid as a next generation washing device, and with it users are able to clean their clothes in the sink or just about any area that can hold water and clothing. Detergent is mixed in with the water and dirty clothes, then the Dolfi is plugged in and placed in the water.

Once turned on, Dolfi will glow blue and use ultrasound to create microscopic jets of water, essentially, which clean dirt and stains out of the fabric.

The makers of Dolfi will launch their bid for funding to manufacture the product on Indiegogo on January 20.

Google predicts driverless cars on public roads in 2-5 years.

DETROIT (AP) — The head of self-driving cars for Google expects real people to be using them on public roads in two to five years.

The small, bulbous cars without steering wheels or pedals are being tested at a Google facility in California.
Urmson wants to reach the point where his test team no longer has to pilot the cars.
Google Inc., which is based in Mountain View, California, may face state regulatory hurdles depending on where it chooses to test the cars in public.

He predicted that the cars would fail at some point on public roads, but said Google's cars have been driven more than 700,000 miles on public roads without causing a crash.

Organic Agriculture Can Feed the World

A recent opinion piece in the Maui News blog opposing organic agriculture and in support of biotech GE (GMO) research in Hawaii accused organic agriculture of being a reason people are starving.

Fear that if you in some way oppose GE chemical agriculture you also oppose feeding the starving.

In the 2014 study conducted by the University of Berkeley Institute of Food, researchers demonstrated that organic agriculture could satisfy the world’s appetite.
